Position Title: Senior Accountant
Position Type: Full-time (35 hours/week)
Reports To: Controller
Location: West Hartford, CT (with potential hybrid flexibility based on candidate suitability; requires regular on-site presence)
Compensation: $65,000 - $75,000 depending on experience

Position Summary 
The Senior Accountant plays a pivotal operational role in ensuring the daily financial integrity, efficiency, and compliance of two entities: Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford (JFS) and Care at Home by JFS (CAH). Reporting directly to the Controller, this position carries full end-to-end operational responsibility for organizational accounting workflows including agency and program payrolls, accounts payable (A/P), accounts receivable (A/R), client billing, and monthly reconciliations.

Responsibilities and Expectations
Shared Responsibilities (Dual-Agency Support)

  • Perform monthly bank and account reconciliations across all agency funds and programs. Assist the Controller with preliminary monthly statements, board materials, and departmental analysis
  • Manage full-cycle A/P processes for both JFS and CAH, including invoice approval and payment issuance
  • Support restricted grant tracking, annual audit schedules, and state/federal filings. Enforce internal controls, financial workflows, and non-medical home care regulatory standards
  • Assist with annual tax processing, timely distribution of W-2s/1099s, and annual business insurance renewals/regulatory compliance alongside the Controller
  • Perform additional duties or job functions as deemed necessary by JFS management

Care at Home (CAH) Specific Focus

  • Record weekly payroll, fund payroll accounts, and upload retirement transactions for all CAH employees
  • Track A/R aging and collaborate with the CAH team to follow up with clients, payors, and insurers to resolve unpaid balances

JFS Specific Focus

  • Process bi-weekly staff payroll accurately through ADP

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Education and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in bookkeeping, non-profit accounting, billing, and compliance
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field

Technical Expertise

  • Working knowledge and practical experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), specifically in a nonprofit environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and high proficiency across the entire Microsoft Office Suite
  • Hands-on proficiency in QuickBooks Online, ADP, Bill.com and database management

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with strong customer service standards
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight while contributing positively to a team-based environment

  • Proficient in spreadsheet software
