Member Spotlight: Live Life Bookkeeping
Meet Mary Jane Sullivan, owner of Live Life Bookkeeping, a valued member of the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce.
In this edition of Member Spotlights, we share the story behind the business, explore what inspires their work, and highlight the impact they are making in West Hartford’s vibrant business community.
What inspired you to start (or lead) your business?
After 26 years as a teacher, I was ready for a new chapter that still allowed me to help people in a meaningful way. I saw so many small business owners overwhelmed by their books — staying up late trying to “figure out QuickBooks” instead of focusing on the work they actually love. I started Live Life Bookkeeping to give business owners clarity, confidence, and their time back.
What problem do you solve, and who do you serve?
We support small service-based businesses and nonprofits who aren’t sure if they’re truly profitable, feel behind on their bookkeeping, or experience stress at tax time. Many started out doing it themselves, but the DIY approach is no longer sustainable and their records feel disorganized. We bring structure, clarity, and confidence to their numbers so they can focus on growth.
What is a milestone or moment you’re especially proud of?
I’m proud that our business has grown almost entirely through referrals and relationships, many of which began through Chamber involvement. Growing to nearly 30 ongoing clients while expanding our team — and still maintaining personal, responsive service — has been especially meaningful.
How do you engage with or give back to the local community?
I stay active in the Chamber and love building meaningful connections with other local business owners. I also serve on my HOA board and produce our community newsletter. Outside of work, I play flute and piccolo in community bands — sharing my love of music is one of my favorite ways to give back.
What’s one thing people might not know about your business?
Even though I work remotely, most of my clients are local — I really value those relationships.
How can fellow Chamber members best support or connect with you?
The best way to connect is simply by building relationships and paying it forward. I believe small business owners grow stronger by lifting each other up — so introductions, collaborations, and shared resources are always welcome. I’m happy to be a resource anytime and to connect others when I can.
