Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, now known as the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act was signed into law 50 years
ago this June. Title IX is just 37 words,"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in,
be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial
assistance.", but it changed everything for women and girls. On Apr 27, 2022 at 6:30 at Hall High School, the Town of West
Hartford and the West Hartford Public Schools will hold a celebration of the anniversary by bringing together educators,
coaches, athletes and community leaders whose efforts helped to empower young women by advocating for equal
opportunities in our schools and on the fields of athletics.
The event has inspired a commemorative book capturing the stories of many of West Hartford’s powerful champions for
women’s rights and opportunities on and off the field. Former West Hartford Coach and Athletic Director Dr. Suzi D'Annolfo has
curated a wonderful history of West Hartford women athletes and leaders from 1972 to the present. We would like to offer
this history to all who carried the torch along the way.
